How to prepare for GATE: fundamentals first, then practice
GATE rewards a thorough grasp of your branch's fundamentals and the accuracy to apply them in numerical problems. The syllabus is large and the questions are conceptual, so steady, structured preparation beats last-minute cramming.

The exam at a glance
- Exam
- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
- What it leads to
- M.Tech and Ph.D. admissions at the IITs, NITs and IISc, and recruitment to many PSUs
- Official website
- Published by the organising institute each year; search for the official GATE website.
How the exam works
- It is conducted jointly by IISc and the IITs on a rotating basis. A GATE score is used for admission to M.Tech and PhD programmes at the IITs, NITs, IISc and other institutes, and by some public-sector organisations in recruitment.
- It is a computer-based test with a separate paper for each discipline, and a General Aptitude section common to all. Questions include multiple-choice, multiple-select and numerical-answer types.
- Dates, syllabus, eligibility and the exam pattern are revised from time to time, so confirm all of them on the official website before you plan around them.
Where to focus
Your core subjects
Start with the subjects that carry the most weight in your discipline's syllabus and build the fundamentals first. Make a formula and concept sheet per subject.
Engineering mathematics and general aptitude
General aptitude is common to every paper and engineering mathematics appears in most of them. Both are among the quickest sections to improve with regular practice.
Numerical answer questions
There are no options to work back from. Practise carrying units and precision through a calculation and checking limiting cases.
A weekly rhythm that works
- One subject at a time: concepts, solved examples, then previous-year questions.
- Weekly revision of earlier subjects, from your formula sheets.
- Monthly: a full-length test, with a detailed error analysis.

Common mistakes
- Collecting resources instead of finishing one.
- Solving previous-year questions without understanding the underlying concept.
- Ignoring units and precision in numerical answers.
- Not revising early subjects.
Frequently asked questions
Does Learnsable cover my GATE branch?
It's a general study assistant, so you can ask about any branch's topics. Always check against your reference textbooks and the official syllabus.
Can AI solve GATE numericals reliably?
It can show the method, but it can slip on arithmetic. Verify the final number independently.
Where do I check the official syllabus and dates?
On the official GATE website for the current year; search for the GATE organising institute's page.
