How to prepare for the CBSE Class 12 board exams
Class 12 boards reward students who know the NCERT thoroughly and present answers the way examiners expect. They're also the basis for college admission, which makes steady preparation more valuable than a final-month sprint.

How the exam works
- They are conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and lead to the Class 12 board certificate, which is the basis for college admission.
- CBSE has been adding competency-based and case-based questions to its papers, so understanding concepts matters more than memorising answers.
- Dates, syllabus, eligibility and the exam pattern are revised from time to time, so confirm all of them on the official website before you plan around them.
Where to focus
NCERT first
Master the NCERT textbook and its exercises before you reach for guides. Boards are written from it.
Answer presentation
In maths and science, show every step, label diagrams, and state formulae and units. Marks follow the steps, not just the final answer.
Sample and previous papers
Use CBSE's sample papers and marking schemes to learn how marks are allotted, and practise writing within the time.
If you're also preparing for entrance exams
Boards and entrance exams overlap heavily. Use the same concepts, but practise board-style written answers separately.
A weekly rhythm that works
- Weekdays: finish chapter study and exercises as they're taught.
- Weekly: one timed written paper section, marked against the scheme.
- Monthly: revise earlier chapters using questions, not rereading.
- In the last weeks: full sample papers and a final pass through your mistake log.
