How the exam works

  • It is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for Group B and Group C posts in central ministries and departments.
  • The selection is in more than one tier, and the first tier covers General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. The exam is computer-based; check the current notification for the structure of later tiers.
  • Dates, syllabus, eligibility and the exam pattern are revised from time to time, so confirm all of them on the official website before you plan around them.

Where to focus

Quantitative aptitude

Fundamentals first (percentages, ratios, averages, time and work), then shortcuts you understand. Memorising tricks without the idea behind them breaks on an unfamiliar question.

Reasoning

Pattern recognition improves with volume. Practise each question type until the method is automatic.

English

Grammar rules, vocabulary in context and daily reading passages; keep an error list of rules you misapply.

General awareness

Steady, syllabus-aligned reading and revision, with short notes and flashcards.

A weekly rhythm that works

  • Daily: timed sets in two sections, reviewed immediately.
  • Weekly: a full-length mock and an error analysis.
  • Always: short flashcards for general awareness and vocabulary.

  • Taking mocks without analysing them.
  • Neglecting English and general awareness because they feel easier.
  • Not practising under the clock.
